Project synopsis
This project focuses on the planning, development and sourcing of a fashion range. It will develop your understanding of the roles of the buyer and merchandiser and the typical skills and attributes required for these roles. It will also provide the opportunity to reflect on and develop your own personal skills and commercial awareness.
Project/Assessment requirements:
A fully researched written and visual plan for a new fashion range with a final reflective commentary and skills evaluation.
Work to be submitted in a well-organised A4 document with front cover and contents page. Overall presentation should reflect the image of the brand and the “look” you want to convey with your range.
Word count=5000 words
  • Your project must be referenced in APA 6th style and you should avoid the use of the first person except in the “Personal Reflection” section
  • The  digital file should be handed in through unilearn

Project/Assessment Task:
You are to produce a new range proposal for a fashion or textile organisation of your choice. Your proposal should be supported by primary and secondary research. You are to select a fashion organisation and identify an opportunity for a new range. This could be to attract a new customer, enter a new market or to retain the current customer.

There are 3 key elements to the project:
A proposal for a new range
Fashion retailers develop new ranges and ideas on a continual basis, to keep their current customers interested and excited or to encourage new customers. Recent examples include Warehouse launching a range of footwear or Hunter developing a clothing fashion collection. Some retailers best known for clothing have expanded into homeware.
You will need to include:
  • Outline of idea and rationale
  • Brand identity
  • Mood/story board, colour palette and trend research to show inspiration behind the range
  • Customer profile
  • Evidence of primary research to help justify and direct your plans

Range Plan and Presentation
Range presentation is a key event in the buying calendar; it is when buyers and merchandisers present the new range to senior management for “sign off” prior to orders being raised. This part of the project emulates this aspect of range planning. Your visual presentation should show your range clearly with style number, description, colour and fabric details, size range and selling price. The range table and analysis summary tables should demonstrate that you have considered price architecture and range balance
  • Visual range plan – attractively presented to show how the range co-ordinates with colour options and fabric swatches
  • Range plan in form of a table (excel is recommended) showing suggested quantities, target cost prices, selling prices,  margins, suppliers  and overall spend
  • Size ratios
  • Comp. shop to benchmark prices and quality
  • Sourcing strategy – considering where suppliers are based, number of suppliers to use, specific requirements for your range and how you would work with your supply base
  • Ethical and environmental issues
  • Range analysis; e.g. by product category, price point, supplier, colour
Your range should include a minimum of 25 and maximum of 50 SKUS
Reflective Commentary

You are to consider the specific skills set required for a specific role in fashion (e.g. buyer, merchandiser) and reflect on your own skills and development in relation to this. You should use appropriate templates to show a depth of reflection.
