Introduction Draws audience in with thoughtful discussion of larger conversation around topic and summary of article including author’s name, title of article, clear statement of author’s main argument, and a brief description of evidence used. 1 Attempts discussion of issue but does not go deep enough. Gives summary of article but does not clearly articulate author’s argument. 0.5 Introduction is missing information or uses generalities and vague ideas that do not engage audience. Student fails to identify or misinterprets author’s argument.0
Thesis Statement Makes detailed, complex argument about success or failure of essay using descriptive language and specific examples. 1 Establishes argument about success or failure of essay but may need more detail and descriptive language. 0.5 Does not establish clear argument about success or failure of essay, or addresses agreement/disagreement with topic of essay instead of critical response. 0
Evidence/analysis Uses specific and varied examples from essay and clear critical logic/analysis in defense of his or her thesis statement throughout paper. 1.5 Uses specific examples but does not go deep with logic/analysis in defense of thesis or lets information speak for itself. 1 Does not use specific examples or critical analysis at college level. 0
Conclusion Conclusion goes beyond simple restatement of thesis and engages audience in further discussion of issue. 1 Conclusion makes attempt at engaging audience but needs more detail and/or specific ideas. 0.5 Conclusion merely restates thesis/evidence and does not engage audience in further discussion. 0

15 = 100% = A+
14.5 = 97% = A
14 = 93% = A
13.5 = 90% = A-
13 = 87% = B+
12.5 = 83% = B
12 = 80% = B-
11.5 = 77% = C+
11 = 73% = C
10.5 = 70% = C-
10 = 67% = D+
9.5 = 63% = D
9 = 60% = D-
8.5 and below = F
 
*A note on paper length: I expect you all to meet minimum paper length. Papers that fall below minimum length by 1-150 words will lose 10 percent of final score. Papers that fall below minimum paper length by more than 150 words will not be graded and will receive a 0.
 
Course/Instructor information and Works Cited page do not count as part of paper length.
