Your final paper for this course will be a 5 page essay that explores one of the topics covered in class this semester. This is a small research paper, in which you will be further developing your knowledge about one of the topics we have already covered in class.

If you include images in your essay, these do not count toward the overall 5 pages. Your essay should follow the usual formatting guidelines that you have been asked to follow for all of our assignments:

·Single space your heading
·1-2 double spaced pages (not inclusive of images)
·1 inch margins (remember- MS Word defaults to 1.25)
·Include page numbers
·Use a standard 12 point font (such as Times New Roman or Cambria)

The focus of your paper is up to you, but here are some possibilities based on topics we have addressed in class this semester.

·Non-Western Representations of space (map-like things, such as Aboriginal Bark paintings, or the Micronesian Stick Charts from earlier this semester)
·Early European map-like things (Matthew Paris’ artwork, Portolan Charts, etc)
·The historical evolution of mapping
·Wartime maps
·Map Projections
·Electoral Maps
·Office of Strategic Services Maps
·Claude Shannon and Cryptography
·Propaganda Maps
·Residential Segregation (deed covenants and/or Redlining maps)
·Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps
·Mapping Territorial Disputes (Crimea, Tibet, Western Sahara, or anywhere else)
·The Bowman Expedition
·The Zapatistas
·Mapping issues related to health, disease control, epidemiology
·The physical infrastructure of the internet
·The development of the internet
·Digital mapping (focus one some aspect within this topic: a specific type of map, a specific software, Google and privacy concerns, etc)
·Gamification and its role in gathering spatial data

Assignment Requirements:

·Points will be deducted if you do not follow the formatting instructions above.
·You should have at least 5 reliable sources that you are drawing from for your information. These sources could be things we have already read or discussed in class, or they could be things that you find on your own. Wikipedia is not a reliable source for this assignment! Your sources should be listed on a references page (not counted in your overall 5 pages), following the format of your choice (MLA, APA, etc).
·A rough draft and list of sources will be due Monday, 12.12.16. This rough draft will count as Assignment #5 for the class. Details about what you should have for the rough draft will be provided to you closer to that date.

Some tips to help you get started:

·Look over lecture slides, investigate the links that are posted within the slides
·Look through the readings we have had so far this semester
·Get creative with your keyword searching, use synonyms, different combinations of terms, etc.
·There are several sites online that have huge repositories of maps. Here are few you might check out:
