CRITICAL RESPONSE THESIS STATEMENT GUIDELINES
 
To understand what a critical thesis statement is, we must first understand what a thesis is.
A thesis is the clear concise statement that tells the audience what you intend to argue/prove in your paper. It is not simply a topic statement. A thesis makes a claim that someone could disagree with or see differently.
 
For critical response papers, the thesis has to relate to your evaluation of the article you are responding to. The critical response thesis is your opinion about the success or lack of success of an article. It is NOT your opinion about the issue being discussed.
 
Critical thesis examples –
 
“The author makes a successful argument because he uses solid facts to back up his thesis, and uses personal anecdotes to make himself more relatable to his audience.” 
 
“Carson’s article succeeds on one level because he uses descriptive language to connect to his audience, but his argument ultimately is weak because he only looks at one side of the issue.”
 
“Jones’ argument is unconvincing due to her obvious bias against environmentalists and her lack of reliable references.”
 
*Note that these statements don’t go into lengthy descriptions of the article. When you reach your thesis we should already know what it’s about and what it argues specifically, because you have summarized it in your introduction.
 
**Also note that, as TSIS discusses, thesis statements don’t have to express complete agreement or disagreement. A thesis should reflect the complexities of your argument as specifically as possible.
 
What not to do:
Do not simply make an argument about the issue being discussed in the article. Your opinion on the issue will certainly play a part in your critique, but that is not the point of your thesis.
 
This is NOT a critical response thesis – “School sports programs are beneficial because they give students much needed discipline and develop social skills necessary for success in life.” 
 
This is a thesis, yes, but it’s a different type of thesis – this is an argument thesis about a subject, not about an essay, and is not appropriate for a critical analysis. You will use an argument thesis in the longer research paper at the end of the semester.
 
Do NOT use vague or general terms in your statement (or your paper). Terms like “good” “bad” “right” and “wrong” are subjective terms - they have different meanings for different people and are not specific enough to make a cogent academic argument. Use specific terms that directly address the qualities of the essay you wish to discuss.
